Dharmendra may be celebrated today as Bollywood’s iconic ‘He-Man’, known for his strong physique and action-hero image, but his journey in cinema began on a very different note. In the early years of his career, Dharmendra was admired as one of the most charming romantic heroes on screen. In fact, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, international media named him among the most handsome men in the world, placing him alongside top global heartthrobs.
Dharmendra: When the World Called Him the Most Handsome Man
As Dharmendra rose to fame as a leading man in the 70s, several film magazines in India and abroad published features praising his striking looks. Many international publications ranked him in the top 10 and even top 5 most handsome men globally, with some even placing him in the No. 1 spot.
Dharmendra himself fondly remembered these comparisons. In an old interview with Lehren Retro, he recalled being compared to Hollywood icons like James Dean and Paul Newman.
He shared with a smile:
“Some people compared me to a Hollywood star, but maine uski picture hi nahi dekhi thi. When I finally watched his film, I thought maybe from the side, I do look like him a little. Mujhe khud bhi lagne laga.”
The actor’s combination of innocence, masculinity, and effortless screen presence made him a phenomenon — one who charmed not just India but audiences around the world.
