Prosecutors have requested a 13-year prison sentence for Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, who was convicted of shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. Megan called for a stiff sentence, stating that she has not experienced peace since the incident. Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of three felonies, including assault with a firearm. He was originally set to be sentenced in January but obtained new attorneys and filed a motion for a new trial, which was denied. Lanez’s lawyers have asked for probation and a residential drug treatment program. Megan stated that she could not bring herself to be in a room with Lanez again. The judge received numerous letters, including one from Lanez’s 6-year-old son, and heard testimonies from witnesses advocating for leniency. The shooting occurred after the two attended a party at Kylie Jenner’s home, and Lanez fired shots at Megan following an argument. Megan did not name Lanez as her assailant until September, and the incident sparked conspiracy theories and divided opinions within the hip-hop industry. Megan’s treatment as a survivor of the shooting has sparked discussions about the treatment of Black female survivors. Lanez maintains his innocence and claims to have been wrongfully convicted. Both Lanez and Megan have had successful careers in the music industry.
