Switzerland’s right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has been asked by musician Nile Rodgers to stop using a version of Sister Sledge’s hit song “We Are Family” in its election campaigns. The SVP released a song called “Das Isch d’SVP” (That’s the SVP) that directly echoes the chorus of the 1979 hit composed by Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. Rodgers, who has a history of political activism, tweeted that he wrote “We Are Family” as a song about inclusion and diversity and condemns its use by the SVP or anyone not in line with the song’s values. The SVP delegate credited as the artist behind the song claims that it is an original composition, but the song has been taken down from YouTube due to a copyright infringement complaint. A stripped-back “sovereignty remix” of the song remains available on the site.
