In an interview to Bollywood Hungama, Subhash Ghai had refrained from casting any superstar other than Shah Rukh Khan in the popular 1997 film ‘Pardes’. He also gave the reason for this. Subhash Ghai says, ‘I wanted a new girl to do the film ‘Pardes’. Madhuri was already signed for 3 films and Ganga was her favorite subject. Earlier the name of ‘Pardes’ was Ganga. There was also a message from Salman sahib that he is willing to work with us.
Subhash Ghai did not want to take any other big star except Shahrukh
He further explains, ‘My office people said that ‘Pardes’ film is being made, there are two heroes, so why not sign Shahrukh, Salman and Madhuri, but I thought that I want a new girl. Madhuri Dixit was a star and if I make such a big star look like a naive girl, then it will seem that she is being manipulated. In the script I wrote, there should have been a new girl.
Subhash Ghai stuck to his point
He further said, ‘The people of my company were saying that there should be a star cast and I was saying that I do not want a star cast film. This went on for three months. Distributors also said that if they take this star cast, they will give whatever money they ask for, but I said that take a new star cast and I will keep the price you pay. They thought that maybe I was talking in arrogance. I told him that I will tell his value and story when the picture is released. Let us tell you that Shahrukh Khan, Mahima Chaudhary and Apoorva Agnihotri were in the lead roles in ‘Pardes’.
