New Delhi: ‘The whole city knows me by the name of Lion’, ‘Lily Don’t Be Silly’ and ‘Mona Darling’.. On hearing these dialogues, only one picture emerges in your mind, whose name is Ajit Khan. Ajit, who maintained his fear in 200 films for nearly 4 decades, died on 22 October 1998. The parents had named Hamid Ali Khan but became famous by his stage name Ajit. Ajit was such a fine artist who broke the stereotype of the villain in Indian cinema and appeared on the screen a gentleman-looking, well-read, white-boots and coat-pants with a pipe-puffed villain pressed into his mouth. The real life of Ajit, who achieved a different position in Bollywood, was also no less interesting than any film story.

Born on 27 January 1922 in Hyderabad, Bollywood’s famous villain Ajit Khan introduced the audience to a new style villain in the 70s. This villain neither came riding on a horse and covered his face with black cloth, nor did he look like a moneylender-usurer, it was seen in any hotel, pub-bar. Known for his unique dialogue delivery, Ajit neither spoke in a loud voice nor screamed, but by delivering dialogues in his low voice, he used to fill the audience sitting in the theater with shudder.

‘The whole city knows me by the name of Lion’
Ajit worked in many films, but in the film ‘Kalicharan’, when he said on the screen, ‘The whole city knows me by the name of Lion’, then the audience became a fan of the excellent dialogue delivery. Because of this famous dialogue, the audience still remembers him. Ajit Khan was such a villain of Hindi cinema, whose payout many times overshadowed the hero of the film. Ajit’s real life is also no less than a film story.

Ajit used to live in cement pipe
Ajit wanted to become an actor since childhood. Ajit’s passion for acting was such that it is said that Ajit sold his books to fulfill his dream and left Hyderabad and came to Mayanagari with the money received from him. Ajit ran away from home and came to Mayanagari, but there was neither a place to live nor a place to eat. In such a situation, he made his hide in cement pipes to hide his head. But trouble did not stop here either. Local goons used to extort a week from the people living in the pipe. They used to beat up for not giving money. One day Ajit beat up the goons and became a hero for the people living there.

Ajit wanted to be a hero
Although Ajit never wanted to be a villain, his dream was to become a hero. Ajit also worked as a hero in some films in the initial period but did not get success, but became famous when he landed in the role of villain. Ajit immortalized his characters in Hindi cinema forever with his brilliant acting.
