The film was postponed because of this
Atul had said in his recent interview that he wrote Laal Singh Chaddha in 15 days, but Aamir did not listen to the script for two years. They had watched a Hollywood film together before starting work on the Hindi remake of Atul. Aamir agreed to this and said – yes. I was a little worried as he had written his first script and asked me to listen to it very enthusiastically. I felt that if I listened and didn’t like, they would feel bad. Plus, it’s hard to imagine a film like Forrest Gump, which is such a cult classic, that I would get cast in another film. So I didn’t listen to his script for two years.
Aamir got angry at first
Aamir said, ‘I was like, ‘How dare you write a remake of Forrest Gump?’ You can’t even think of making Forrest Gump again. It is like rebuilding Mughal-e-Azam and Mother India. Why waste my time listening to what I thought I didn’t want to make? But when I heard it, I was blown away. I think he did it right. It was a very exciting experience for me. The moment I heard it, I said I wanted to do it.’
Aamir was not ready to listen to the script
Atul told Hindustan Times in an interview this week, “Aamir didn’t read the script for the first two years. It’s not that we weren’t meeting or that we weren’t in touch. All the time, he used to say, ‘Yes, you read. Two years later I asked him when we would read and then he said ‘You’re not a writer and you tell me you wrote the Forrest Gump remake in 15 days’. You are a close friend and I do not want to disappoint you by saying that you have written very badly’. So he was not listening to the script.
Laal Singh Chaddha, directed by Advait Chandan, is slated to release on August 11. It also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Mona Singh.
