Mumbai: Famous for the role of ‘Jailor of the British era’ Veteran actor and comedian Asrani was born on 1 January 1941 in Jaipur. Asrani’s full name is Govardhan Asrani. He has worked in films for 5 decades, which includes more than 350 films. Interested in films since childhood, Asrani joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune in 1964 and learned acting from there. He did not get many roles in the initial phase, so he became a teacher in FTII itself. Asrani has worked in hundreds of films, but the jailer character of ‘Sholay’ overshadowed everyone. You will be surprised to know that Asrani, famous for comedy, has also sung songs in films.

Asrani grew up in Jaipur and studied in the pink city itself. Asrani is popularly known as ‘Chonch’ among his friends, but on the professional front he is known as ‘the jailer of the British era’. Regarding this special character of the film ‘Sholay’, Asrani told in an interview that he had made special preparations to play this role. Salim-Javed had given a book, which had pictures of Hitler, they were asked to create the same look. Special people were entrusted with the responsibility of preparing the costumes and wigs. In the Pune Film Institute, there was a recorded voice of Hitler which was used for training the students, after listening to it, Asrani also said on the lines of Hitler, ‘Angrej ke zamaane ke jailor hain’, which became famous.

Asrani is known for comic roles, but few people would know that he also sings very well. Asrani sang two songs in the 1977 film ‘Aalaap’, which were also filmed on him. Apart from this, she also sang a song with famous singer Kishore Kumar in ‘Phool Khile Hai Gulshan Gulshan’. Asrani has done side roles in most of the films, but he has also worked as a lead actor in films like ‘Chala Murari Hero Banane’ and ‘Salaam Memsahab’. Asrani made her debut in films with the film ‘Kaanch Ki Chudiyan’ released in 1967. Apart from this, Asrani has shown excellent performance in films like ‘Mere Apne’, ‘Bawarchi’, ‘Parichay’, ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Mehboob’, ‘Bandish’, ‘Chupke Chupke’.

Asrani is married to actress Manju Bansal, both worked together in many films, Mohabbat Hui toh Shaadi Racha Li. Asrani and Manju have a son, Naveen Asrani. Asrani has three brothers and four sisters. Apart from Hindi, he also worked in Gujarati films. Apart from this, he is also interested in politics. In the year 2004, took the membership of Congress party.
