Bollywood actor Dharam Singh Deol, popularly known as Dharmendra, met his wife and actress Hema Malini for the first time during the shooting of ‘Tum Haseen Main Jawan’. The two were acting in the film and reportedly fell in love with each other around the same time.
Hema rejected all relations for Dharmendra
Hema Malini was the ‘Dream Girl’ of Indian cinema and Dharmendra was the real He-Man of Bollywood. But at that time Dharmendra was married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he has sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. At the same time, Hema turned down marriage proposals from the likes of Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra. According to the Times of India, though the superstars of the bygone era could not stay away from each other, Dharmendra could not remarry as per the Hindu Marriage Act and did not want to divorce his wife.
Islam became each other after marriage
This led the actor to convert to Islam in 1979 to marry the love of his life, Hema, and legalize the marriage, which he could not do as a Hindu. Dharmendra changed his name to Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishna, while Hema changed her name to Ayesha B R Chakraborty and the two tied the knot in 1980. After three years of marriage, Hema gave birth to two daughters Isha and then Ahana.
Hema had told that thing
The famous reel and real life couple never discussed their change of religion in the media. Earlier, on the stage of Indian Idol, Hema had told that her father tried hard not to get any chance to meet Dharmendra. He had said, ‘Usually my mother or aunt used to accompany me on shoots. But during the shooting of one of my songs, my father was with me. He was worried that Dharam ji and I would spend time alone because he knew we were friends.
Father did not want Dharmendra to come closer
He further said, ‘I remember when we used to travel in the car, my father would immediately sit next to me. But they did not stop Dharam ji from sitting on the seat immediately next to us. Hema and Dharmendra have worked together in dozens of hit films including Sholay, Sita Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Dream Girl, Naya Zamana and Razia Sultan.
