When it comes to costume designing in Indian cinema, Bhanu Athaiya’s name comes at the top. He designed costumes for more than 100 films in a span of about 50 years. She is the first Indian who won an Oscar Award. He received this award for the film ‘Gandhi’, which was directed by Richard Autenborough.

Bhanu Athaiya won the National Award twice
Interestingly, he started his career as an artist. She was a Gold Medalist in Painting. When painting met with cinema, a magic happened, which was felt by the audience knowingly or unknowingly on the screen. He won his first National Award for the film ‘Lekin’ in the year 1991, then he got his second National Award for ‘Lagaan’. Bhanu Athaiya last designed the costumes for the film ‘Swadesh’.

Bhanu Athaiya worried about security of Oscar trophy
There was such a tour in Bhanu Athaiya’s life, when she wanted to return her Oscar trophy. In fact, she was concerned about the security of the trophy, as there were several cases of missing awards in India. She did not want her Oscar trophy to be the same fate. He had said during a conversation with the BBC, ‘There is a question of security of the trophy. I want its protection even further.

Bhanu Athaiya was suffering from brain tumor for the last three years of her life.
Bhanu Athaiya often used to go to the Oscar office. He had seen the Oscar trophies of many winners kept there. He felt that if the trophy was kept in the Oscar office, then more and more people would be able to see it. The last three years of Bhanu Athaiya’s life were very difficult. She was suffering from brain tumor. He breathed his last on 15 October 2020.
