The story of the film revolves around a girl, Kaira, who falls in love thrice and is aware of the different perspectives of love all the three times. Due to failure in her relationship and career, Kaira becomes a victim of insomnia. She meets a psychiatric doctor, Jahangir Khan i.e. Shah Rukh Khan, who treats her differently and also teaches her life lessons.

In ‘Dear Zindagi’, Alia Bhatt played the role of a cinematographer who wants to make a film. Focused on her career but confused about her relationship. Troubled by the breakup twice, Kaira goes to shoot in Goa, where she meets Dr. Jags aka Jahangir at a mental health and awareness seminar. Jahangir is a psychologist and his therapy leads to a lot of improvement. Then in the meantime, a musician Ali Zafar meets. Alia Bhatt had told in an interview to the media that ‘It is very important to take risk in life. As an artist, until you do some work, you do not know what you are capable of. There is no sense in taking risk, you just have to take it. Shah Rukh Khan gave this advice to Alia.

The film ‘Dear Zindagi’ was jointly produced by Gauri Shinde, Gauri Khan, Karan Johar and R Balki. This film was made at a cost of 46 crores. The film did an average performance in theatres. On completion of 6 years of ‘Dear Zindagi’, Alia Bhatt has shared a clip on Insta Story, in which she is seen on the beach with Shahrukh during the shooting of the film.

Apart from Alia Bhatt-Shahrukh Khan in the film ‘Dear Zindagi’, there were also veteran actors like Kunal Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Angad Bedi, Ali Jaffer and Ira Dubey.
