Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, and Subhash Kapoor Summoned by Pune Court Over Jolly LLB 3

The upcoming Bollywood film Jolly LLB 3 has run into legal trouble just weeks after its teaser release. A civil court in Pune has issued summons to lead actors Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, and director Subhash Kapoor following allegations that the film disrespects the Indian judiciary.

The summons, issued in response to a petition filed by lawyer Wajed Rahim Khan, directs the three film personalities to appear in person on October 28, 2025, at 11 a.m.

Why Was the Complaint Filed?

According to advocate Wajed Rahim Khan, the petition accuses the makers of mocking the legal system and showing lawyers and judges in a poor light. Khan objected to certain dialogues and scenes, including an instance where judges are referred to as “mama,” a slang term considered disrespectful in a courtroom context.

Speaking to ANI, Khan explained his concerns:

“There should be respect for the lawyers. That is why I filed a petition in the court. Whatever they have shown about the advocates and the judges is wrong. I filed a petition in the Pune court, and the court has asked Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, and the director to be present.”

The complaint was initially filed in 2024, shortly after the first teaser of Jolly LLB 3 was released. The teaser showcased the much-awaited clash of the two iconic Jolly characters — one played by Akshay Kumar and the other by Arshad Warsi.

The Court’s Direction

The Pune civil court has now issued summons to the lead actors and director underlining the seriousness of the allegations. The court has sought a personal appearance of:

  • Akshay Kumar (Lead Actor)

  • Arshad Warsi (Lead Actor)

  • Subhash Kapoor (Writer-Director)

All three are expected to appear in court on October 28 at 11 a.m. to respond to the allegations and provide clarity about the film’s content.

The Jolly LLB Franchise – A Quick Recap

Jolly LLB 3 is the third installment in the popular legal-comedy franchise:

  • Jolly LLB (2013): Directed by Subhash Kapoor and starring Arshad Warsi as the small-time lawyer Jagdish Tyagi (Jolly), the film became a sleeper hit, earning nearly ₹50 crore on a modest ₹10 crore budget. Its sharp courtroom humor and satirical take on corruption won critical acclaim.

  • Jolly LLB 2 (2017): The sequel featured Akshay Kumar as Jagdishwar Mishra (another Jolly) and emerged as a superhit, collecting over ₹200 crore worldwide. The film maintained its satirical edge while presenting a more commercial narrative.

  • Jolly LLB 3 (2025): For the first time, both Jollys — Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi — will share the screen, playing rival lawyers in an epic courtroom battle. The film is written and directed by Subhash Kapoor and produced by Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare under Star Studio 18. The theatrical release is scheduled for September 19, 2025.

What Makes Jolly LLB 3 Controversial?

While the franchise is known for its satirical take on the legal system, the current controversy stems from allegations that the tone has crossed into outright disrespect.

  • Key Allegation: The film allegedly portrays the legal profession and judiciary negatively.

  • Specific Scene: References to judges as “mama” (a colloquial slang) have drawn objections.

  • Petitioner’s Concern: Such depictions could erode public respect for the legal system.

The controversy reflects an ongoing debate in Indian cinema about creative freedom versus responsible portrayal of institutions.

Impact on the Film’s Release

As of now, Jolly LLB 3 remains on track for its September 19, 2025 release. However, depending on the court’s directions, the makers may have to:

  1. Provide clarifications about the content,

  2. Modify or delete scenes deemed objectionable, or

  3. Face possible delays if the legal proceedings intensify.

Industry insiders believe the film’s strong star power and previous box office track record are likely to keep audience interest high despite the controversy. In fact, legal challenges of this nature often draw even more attention to an upcoming release.

Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi’s Onscreen Reunion

One of the biggest attractions of Jolly LLB 3 is the face-off between two versions of Jolly:

  • Akshay Kumar’s Jagdishwar Mishra (from Jolly LLB 2)

  • Arshad Warsi’s Jagdish Tyagi (from Jolly LLB 1)

The teaser hints at a high-voltage courtroom clash, witty exchanges, and intense drama, making this the most ambitious entry in the franchise yet.

Director Subhash Kapoor has previously stated that the film will combine satire with strong emotional undertones, promising a balance between humor and meaningful commentary on India’s legal system.

Conclusion: A Case of Cinema vs. Sensitivity?

The summons issued to Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, and Subhash Kapoor underline the thin line between satire and perceived disrespect. While the Jolly LLB franchise has previously been celebrated for its sharp humor and social critique, the new allegations suggest growing sensitivity around how professions and institutions are portrayed in mainstream cinema.

As the case moves forward, all eyes are on October 28, 2025, when the stars and director will personally appear in the Pune civil court. For now, Jolly LLB 3 remains one of Bollywood’s most anticipated films of 2025, promising both entertainment and controversy in equal measure.
